Melrose Movement is gaining momentum!

29th Jan

Another great turn out on Saturday with over a dozen volunteers – widening the monument trail with a big thanks to Chris Cains doing an excellent job on the mini excavator. Diggers, mountain bikers and Melrose locals were rewarded with a SFRR club sponsored pump track party that night, Hu, Michael and Andy deserve a special mention for getting it in shape and lights on so we could pump the track late into the night.

Let’s keep the momentum up – plenty of trails to maintain. If Rich can’t make the regular Wednesday arvo and Sat morning digs and your in Melrose keen to hit the trails with the pick give him a call and he can let you know where to go.
Over the Edge is closed till 1 March but we are in town, rich is either riding or on the trails  and only a phone call away so please don’t hesitate – you can also pick up the trails map at the General Store – see you soon!

Whisky Trail @ Barts

24th Jan

Fitchey and Rich have been doing some early morning trail building and this is what they have accomplished! Well done boys – bloody hot out there! How do they find the energy – off for a 90km road ride tomorrow morning then onto the pump track in the arvo for some maintenance.  Plenty to do here – come and give the boys a hand – they need some fresh blood – conversation is waning…..

Greener Pastures – keep the flow!

21st Jan

Volunteers rocked up at OTE this morning ready for some serious digging! Not all of them were riders either – a retired local community member who wants to help out with the maintenance of our trails as he sees the importance of having these trails in excellent condition was there willing to give us a hand!
After their shot of espresso they were on the trails by 8am. After a good solid 3 hours their work was done – The boys have returned the bottom of greener pastures from the past 2 years of wash out back to its former glory with some modern day improvements. Go and check it out one day – you will be able to see many more improvements done on the Melrose trails as the “Southern Flinders Rough Riders” will now be meeting on a more regular basis. More volunteers would be great though, so if you are interested give rich a call.

Next meet will be this Wednesday afternoon 25 Jan – rich will be leaving 4pm sharp from OTE and driving up to Bartagunyah for work on the Whisky Trail. Best to car pool – he will be heading home on dark.

Sat 28th meet at 7:30am at OTE for work on the melrose trails – grab some lunch at the pub / go for a ride then head on over to the pump track mid arvo – SFRR will put on a BBQ and some beers for our volunteers and friends – bring a salad and BYO drinks.

Southern Flinders Rough Riders are local volunteers who help support / maintain / build sustainable mountain bike trails

We want to keep attracting riders to our region so with over 80 km of Singletrack, it means we need your help! “Many hands make light work”

It is Social – but doesn’t have to be…. It’s rewarding – the riders will love you for it, it is a chance for you to explore your own backyard and it will keep you fit!  You don’t need to be a MTB rider to enjoy the benefits of having a dig.

START: 7:30am sharp on the trail and digging by 8am- Saturday 21 + 28 Jan
MEET: Over the Edge
DURATION: ’til lunchtime thereabouts (before it gets to hot!)
WEAR: Sturdy footwear, work gloves, work clothing, hat, sunscreen
TOOLS: Bring your tools. We will have extra, but more is good
WATER: Bring some, as it is thirsty work.
FOOD/ENERGY: Bring some snacks. We’ll have jelly snakes on hand to keep energy levels high.

(Sat 28th January – stay for a BBQ at the Pump track

Bartagunyah Trail Plans

28th Nov

Trail fairies have been hard at work out at Bartagunyah, just near Melrose; this last week as we start on some well needed single track maintenance on the Whiskey Trail. This is one of the best trails on Bartagunyah right now and is a 2-3 hour loop of over 20km. Clearer signage, major improvements and cleaner lines will hopefully see a lot more mountain bike traffic on this black diamond trail.

The other goal for Bartagunyah is to have the Super D completed before Fat Tyre Festival 2012. This has started but not too much has been dug just yet and we are still scouting the lines but a general idea has been discussed. Starting at Scared Rabbit lookout and finishing at Bartagunyah homestead we hope to have close to 5km of trail with other tributary trail options coming off it in the future.

Bartagunyah has been a thoroughly underutilised resource due to its poor signage, lack of rider use and lack of maintenance in the past. The goal over the next 12 months is to change that and make it a must do when you visit Melrose, by improving signage and maps, clarifying the trails and including the stuff that people want to ride, making it visually stunning as well as technically stunning!

So our little bridge (6 metres long) you see is the start of lots more work to go into this area. If you’re keen, join us, we will be having regular digs on Wednesday afternoons and once a month on a Sunday. If you’ve never done trail work before it can be one of the most rewarding jobs you can do, putting back in to the very thing you love, flowing single track!

Big thanks to those folk who have already helped out. You know who you are.
