What’s been happening!

13th Jan

Buller and Beechworth! Absolute heaven! Perfect weather, the sun was shining – 2 days after we had a hail storm in Melbourne?! That’s VIC for you! Rich had his Liteville and Cube Roadie and he hooked up with his mates from Melrose there for abit of riding and some more riding!

Back in Melrose now, we got alot of inspiration and ideas for our shop, so we will be in there most days transforming it, if you don’t see rich in there he has gone for a ride or out trail building. Give him a call especially if you want to go out for a ride!

Come March we will be off again to Buller for the festival, then onto Canberra for the Mont 24 and Capital Punishment however we will have a new shop manager from mid March to help you out!

If we don’t see you there catch up with us in Melrose for the Fat Tyre in June or the 18 Hours of Melrose in September. We are lining up plenty of sponsors/big names and lots of fun stuff so stay tuned.

Bartagunyah Trail Plans

28th Nov

Trail fairies have been hard at work out at Bartagunyah, just near Melrose; this last week as we start on some well needed single track maintenance on the Whiskey Trail. This is one of the best trails on Bartagunyah right now and is a 2-3 hour loop of over 20km. Clearer signage, major improvements and cleaner lines will hopefully see a lot more mountain bike traffic on this black diamond trail.

The other goal for Bartagunyah is to have the Super D completed before Fat Tyre Festival 2012. This has started but not too much has been dug just yet and we are still scouting the lines but a general idea has been discussed. Starting at Scared Rabbit lookout and finishing at Bartagunyah homestead we hope to have close to 5km of trail with other tributary trail options coming off it in the future.

Bartagunyah has been a thoroughly underutilised resource due to its poor signage, lack of rider use and lack of maintenance in the past. The goal over the next 12 months is to change that and make it a must do when you visit Melrose, by improving signage and maps, clarifying the trails and including the stuff that people want to ride, making it visually stunning as well as technically stunning!

So our little bridge (6 metres long) you see is the start of lots more work to go into this area. If you’re keen, join us, we will be having regular digs on Wednesday afternoons and once a month on a Sunday. If you’ve never done trail work before it can be one of the most rewarding jobs you can do, putting back in to the very thing you love, flowing single track!

Big thanks to those folk who have already helped out. You know who you are.

Movember wrap up

28th Nov

Outstanding weather greeted us for the 4th annual Movember Ride from Pt Augusta to Melrose, some 66 odd km away and whilst the numbers were low the quality was high.

Nearly 20 riders left Pt Augusta at 7.30 on Sunday and slowly made their way to Stirling North before the pace started to pickup. Soon Kristian Schmidt was out the front and hauled a big turn, sitting on 40kmh as a gentle zephyr filled in from the North.

The turn off on to the Wilmington Rd was critical. With Alex leading out now, he hit the corner at a pace most other riders didn’t dare and the pack was split with 5 getting away, which soon became 4 and then finally broke up at the entrance to Horrocks pass where Danny King, appropriately named, made his move. Alex stayed with him but when Danny kicked for the final run to the crest of the pass it was too much and Danny claimed the King of the Mountain.

Regrouping in Wilmington and having missed the Wilmington riders as they’d left at 9am the pack was in a menacing mood and the pace was soon hitting 47kmh. Once again “Alex I don’t play well with others” was the culprit for destroying the peloton as he got out in front and kept the pace high for a long turn. This time 6 riders went with him and the pace settled around 40kmh with everyone taking their turn as they climbed back into Melrose but eventually it was too much and as rider after rider popped and slipped out the back. Finally it was down to 3 and after Danny King had a turn at the front Kristian Schmidt made his move about a 1km out. Seeking to catch the other 2 riders by surprise he went out hard but Alex still had the legs to get on his wheel and grind him out until he kicked just before the finish line.

Well done to everyone it was a fun day out with a relaxed and cheerful atmosphere despite the competitiveness. Big thanks to Jeff Arthur and Pip Mawby for driving the sag wagon and to Kerri for getting the logistics in order. Well done to Lance Arthur who at 86 was by far the real winner of the day, he is a shining example of Men’s health!

Pump Track is Pumping!

23rd Nov

A gregarious party was had by all when we trudged down to the pump track to celebrate Naomi’s birthday – and of course we can’t just sit around and talk about the weather, ( all though it is a hot topic here! ) No, there needed to be  1 – competition, 2- bikes, 3- soap suds and 4 – Hugh’s ingenious invention, “the homemade bike spit”  5 – Stop watch. Hugh and Darren prepared dinner – goat on the spit! Scrumptious! And the kids – “small and big” had a go on the very slippery slide! Thanks guys for a lovely night!

Hugh's Bike spit - you need to peddle if you want dinner! Beer in hand, it doesn't look to hard - however 5 hours later goat was served and cooked to perfection!

Rich’s Liteville review and chats about the Cape to Cape

15th Nov

Out of the box this bike was awesome! Which is just as well because in my haste to render our house before the carpet layers came and then travel to WA for the annual Cape to Cape race I had not had a chance to even measure myself on this bike. Even on arrival to Margaret River things were not going my way when I noticed I had forgotten to pack my pedals! All of this conspired to find me on the start line (well just off to the side!) at Cape Leuwin lighthouse with a multi tool in hand adjusting grips saddle and bars before finally setting off on the race 15 minutes after the starters gun had sounded!

Immediately you could feel the quality in this bike, the first hill was an efficient pedal to the top accelerating with the slightest turn of the pedal, absolutely flying past the now last placed person!??? The first fire road decent I found, in my effort to ensure I didn’t sink in the sand, that 20psi was a little too soft! As I landed, after my first water bar launch, the tyre rolled alarmingly but true to its form the bike corrected and accelerated away down the hill! I now added a little caution to my air time but confidence grew as the trail unraveled and I had no hesitation in letting it all hang out on many descents usually with a string of abuse in my wake as I had not hand signaled enough for the many road riders in this race! At the end of race day 1 I found the only changes needed were a little more air pressure and some brake lever adjustment which could only lead to more speed on the descents!

I settled back that evening with a recovery Cascade in hand confident of my new chariot and its ability to get me to the finish line. This confidence should have been reserved for my bike only and certainly not the riders conditioning, but as I lined up on day 2 I found myself accelerating up the hill looking for clear air and the hope of some quality uninterrupted single track. If the race was 20km long I could have been a chance! However as the race wore on energy dropped and with 20km left I found myself like a Calcutta beggar clinging to any wheel for the briefest of assists before falling away on even the smallest of climbs, yep I was cooked, the Woolies trail bars will not run your engine for 60km of off road riding!

With my aspirations dashed I entered day 3 for pure enjoyment and soon realized that the effort on day 2 was well warranted. Congestion on the first part of the trail was at its worst so far in the race and whilst this was by far the best trails we had ridden the pace was that of an over weight tortoise! Mountain bikers can be a cynical bunch and there were soon calls of “Stopping, twig down!” or “fallen leaf, stopping!” Roadies are great climbers but occasional descenders but there is no one else to blame but ourselves for not being at the pointy end of the race, fitness would reward the technical rider with open flowing single track not a verbal spray to our roadie cousins.

Day 3 done I decided that day 4 was not going to be worth the pain as the fire downstairs was raging out of control. I pulled the pin. The bike was a sensation; the rider was, well…, under done. As I settled back at the Margaret River Hotel expecting the All Blacks to canter home with the World Cup I reflected on a race I’d taken all too easy, this had been the reconnoiter look at 2012!

Rich and Squirt go to Cape to Cape!

8th Nov

Rich recently competed in the Cape to Cape event in WA. With his new Liteville Bike – “rides like a dream were his words!” and Wicked campervan ( picture below ) he set off to the beautiful Cape Leeuwin for the start of the Cape to Cape race.

After he set up the Squirt tent which was made available for the riders to lube their chains before and after the event – he was on his bike – the course took him through vineyards / singletrack / disused fire trails and plenty of hills and sand! He rode with the best like Andy Blair, Jason English and Chris Jongewaard, taking in the magic scenery WA has to offer.

Cape to Cape is a 4 day event starts at Cape Leeuwin to Margaret River averaging 40-50 km a day. It is WA’s biggest mountain biking event with a capped number of 750 competitors. Rich will be tempting his parent to come along to next years event held 18-21 OCT 2012 – as his Dad loves to ride and his Mum loves the wine!

NEW DATE for 18 hours of Melrose event – 14-15 SEP 2012 – put this in your diary!

4th Nov

It’s on again!

We would like to introduce a new catergory to our 18 hour event, this has been put on due to feedback from the survey we put out to all of you.  There are riders out there that are just getting into the sport and would like to see a 6 hr catergory – this is also designed for less experienced riders who will not need to ride at night as this will finish at 6pm Saturday.

We have kept the Friday night midnight start to allow plenty of time to get home on the Sunday – and by us getting the date out there now will give you plenty of time to ask for the Friday off to come up here! Finishing at 6pm Saturday allows you to be social – chat about the race over a beer and then be back on the trails that you love on Sunday before you depart!

The course last year worked really well ( after some tweaking ) so expect a nice flowy fun trail with a few technical bits that Melrose is known for – approx 10km loops! Nothing to hard – as long as you have riden some singletrack- it should be achievable by almost all fairly competent mountain bike riders with a reasonable level of fitness. It is not designed for the complete novice or inexperienced mountain bike rider. Each lap of the course will take an average of 45 mins – 1 hour.

We are out there promoting this event at all the big events like Mont 24 /Capital Punishment in Canberra / Mt Buller Festival in VIC / Highland Fling in NSW so feel free to chat to Rich about it – he will be at the Squirt Lube Station or on the trails!

Registrations will open 1 August 2012 – costs and more information out soon, any questions contact kerri@otesports.com.au

Great turn out for the Wilmington to Melrose Rail trail ride!

19th Oct

Wow – what a turn out – alot more than we anticipated so thank you to all that came over from Adelaide, Whyalla and Port Augusta. The riders had a tough head wind but that didn’t stop them, the well deserved BBQ lunch held at Paradise Square in Melrose, that was put on by the Royal Flying Doctor Service would have made anyone ride the 23kms! We saw lots of kids and recreational riders, the rail trail was ideal for them, designed specifically for those that want to “take it easy” and enjoy the scenery along the way. Lots of locals, so we expect to see more people dusting the cobwebs of their bikes and heading out on our very own Rail Trail! If you did participate in the rail trail ride and would like to comment on the trail or event please don’t hesitate to contact kerri@otesports.com.au and I will forward it onto the appropriate person.

If you want an excuse to come back over to ride, we have our annual Movember ride in November, which is another charity ride this one is for Men’s health, it starts at Port Augusta and finishes in Melrose. We do however have a number of riders who pick the group up at Wilmington, so you have the choice this year of riding on the road or the rail trail. Contact OTE for more details or check out the info on “what’s happening- Movember post” on our website.
