Mountain bikers cross to the dark side!

15th Feb

The hot weather brought out some madness yesterday when the Melrose Mountain bikers decided to take to the road and play the Whyalla boys at their own game.
The MAD mile is a 6km circuit around the streets of Whyalla close to the velodrome.
With little wind the pace was fast and the sweat flowed freely in the 37 degree tempreture, this did not deter the 30 odd riders who were there for Danny Kings farewell ride as he heads back to Tasmania after competing in the Otway Odyssey.

Enthusiasm was high but experience was lacking unless your name is “Sparky Fitch” when after 5 laps his natural ability swept him to the finish line at 3rd place.

If you are keen to give it a go – give us a call we will try to go fortnightly whilst day light savings is still on. We will head over on the 28th Feb if anyone wanting to car pool!

MEDIA RELEASE – Squirt Sponsors Chris Jongewaard

That’s right folks Chris Jongewaard just got even faster now he is running Squirt dry chain lube. Late last year Chris signed with the Milka-Superior mountain bike team or Milka-Trek as it was known then. Now Milka-Superior has recently signed Squirt on as their dedicated chain lube. “I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to pick up where I left off in 2009,” said Jongewaard, “and I am aiming to secure a spot in the London 2012 Olympic Games. I am super excited and motivated about rejoining Brentjens’ team and can’t wait to be back in Europe racing with such a professionally run team achieving great things.”

Squirt is a South African product imported by Over the Edge Sports in Melrose South Australia, better known for its fine single track and strong mountain bike culture. “We hope that with us based here in SA and Chris just down the road in Adelaide we can get some real synergies happening and ensure that Chris has all the support he needs for 2012 which is going to be a big year! Richard Bruce founder and Partner of Over the Edge Melrose said.

Melrose Movement is gaining momentum!

29th Jan

Another great turn out on Saturday with over a dozen volunteers – widening the monument trail with a big thanks to Chris Cains doing an excellent job on the mini excavator. Diggers, mountain bikers and Melrose locals were rewarded with a SFRR club sponsored pump track party that night, Hu, Michael and Andy deserve a special mention for getting it in shape and lights on so we could pump the track late into the night.

Let’s keep the momentum up – plenty of trails to maintain. If Rich can’t make the regular Wednesday arvo and Sat morning digs and your in Melrose keen to hit the trails with the pick give him a call and he can let you know where to go.
Over the Edge is closed till 1 March but we are in town, rich is either riding or on the trails  and only a phone call away so please don’t hesitate – you can also pick up the trails map at the General Store – see you soon!

How do they find the energy – off for a 90km road ride tomorrow morning then onto the pump track in the arvo for some maintenance.  Plenty to do here – come and give the boys a hand – they need some fresh blood – conversation is waning…..

Greener Pastures – keep the flow!

21st Jan

Volunteers rocked up at OTE this morning ready for some serious digging! Not all of them were riders either – a retired local community member who wants to help out with the maintenance of our trails as he sees the importance of having these trails in excellent condition was there willing to give us a hand!
After their shot of espresso they were on the trails by 8am. After a good solid 3 hours their work was done – The boys have returned the bottom of greener pastures from the past 2 years of wash out back to its former glory with some modern day improvements. Go and check it out one day – you will be able to see many more improvements done on the Melrose trails as the “Southern Flinders Rough Riders” will now be meeting on a more regular basis. More volunteers would be great though, so if you are interested give rich a call.

Next meet will be this Wednesday afternoon 25 Jan – rich will be leaving 4pm sharp from OTE and driving up to Bartagunyah for work on the Whisky Trail. Best to car pool – he will be heading home on dark.

Sat 28th meet at 7:30am at OTE for work on the melrose trails – grab some lunch at the pub / go for a ride then head on over to the pump track mid arvo – SFRR will put on a BBQ and some beers for our volunteers and friends – bring a salad and BYO drinks.

What’s been happening!

13th Jan

Buller and Beechworth! Absolute heaven! Perfect weather, the sun was shining – 2 days after we had a hail storm in Melbourne?! That’s VIC for you! Rich had his Liteville and Cube Roadie and he hooked up with his mates from Melrose there for abit of riding and some more riding!

Back in Melrose now, we got alot of inspiration and ideas for our shop, so we will be in there most days transforming it, if you don’t see rich in there he has gone for a ride or out trail building. Give him a call especially if you want to go out for a ride!

Come March we will be off again to Buller for the festival, then onto Canberra for the Mont 24 and Capital Punishment however we will have a new shop manager from mid March to help you out!

If we don’t see you there catch up with us in Melrose for the Fat Tyre in June or the 18 Hours of Melrose in September. We are lining up plenty of sponsors/big names and lots of fun stuff so stay tuned.
